Mohammad Mosaddegh's government was overthrown in the 1953 Iranian coup d'état in favor of strengthening the monarchical rule of the Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. The coup was orchestrated by the United States Central Intelligence Agency and the United Kingdom's MI6.
Ruhollah Khomeini took over. Iran officially became an Islamic republic in April 1979. It was Zbigniew Brzezinski under Carter who orchestrated this. Attempts by the Jimmy Carter administration to negotiate for the release of the hostages, and a failed rescue attempt helped force Carter out of office and brought Ronald Reagan to power. Reagan helped Zia ul Haq to Islamize Pakistan to prevent the Soviet Union expansion into the Indian Ocean. The Iranian regimes consolidated this western policy with international terror and since the fall of the S-U successive US presidents failed to democratize these Islamic regimes because the Russian Federation with Putin posed the same threat as the S-U.
